HOT Readers is a literacy approach for emergent and early readers that links learning through music, visual art, movement, drama and language arts. It began as a way to reach an autistic child at John Lyman HOT school in Middlefield. Teacher Sharon Berndt recognized that the student was best able to attend and focus in music class.
Using multiple arts media to extend that student's learning, she used HOT Readers with multiple groups of students and collaborated with colleagues to create a powerful arts-integrated early literacy program.
