The HOT Schools Program has been awarded a contract with Department of Vision, Strength and Artistic Expression and Accessible arts (VSAarts) at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to provide a two part professional development opportunity. Classroom teachers, special education teachers, arts essentialists, and teaching artists will come together to:
Explore a unique approach to the theory and practice of arts integration while learning new strategies to adapt teaching practice to reflect inclusion of students with all abilities
Gain confidence in integrating the arts
Understand Universal Design for Learning, the HOT Approach, and Multiple Intelligence Theory
Become part of a larger community of educators addressing adaptation and inclusion issues
Workshop 1: March 22, 2018 9:00AM-3:30PM Participants will rotate through three arts integrated opportunities reflecting Music and Social Studies, Dance and Science, and Visual Arts and Literacy.
Workshop 2: May 2, 2018 9:00AM-3:30PM Additional professional development followed by sharing and reflecting on teaching strategies and integrated lessons developed among all participants.
Workshop presenters Louise Pascale and Susan Fisher, authors of the Multi-Arts Resource Guide and Connecticut Dance artist and founder of Kimnetics, Kim Renee Thibodeau will provide opportunities to learn about Universal Design and experience adapted inclusive units of study featuring Music and Social Studies, Visual Arts and Literacy, and Dance and Science.
Participation is required in both full day workshops, with time in between to design, implement, experiment and refine a lesson or an integrated unit of study. Workshop presenters will be available for consultation between workshops.
We invite you join this two part workshop series:
A maximum of 3 teachers may participate per school.
Participants may come as individual teachers, though we recommend a team of classroom teacher, special education teacher, and an arts essentialist.
Teaching artistsare invited to participate to deepen their teaching practice to reach all learners.
Participants will be required to:
Register for and attend both workshops
Complete brief pre and post questionnaires and a final reflection
Work on designing a lesson/unit to be implemented in your teaching practice
Reflect and report back on the teaching strategy you used as a work in progress or completed lesson/unit at 2nd workshop.
This workshop series is offered at no charge. Participating schools will be responsible for substitutes and releasing teachers to participate in both sessions.
